Turkish rescue teams have managed to find alive on Tuesday several people who had been trapped more than 200 under the rubble of collapsed buildings following earthquakes on February 6 in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border.
According to information gathered by the Turkish state news agency Anatolia, a 35-year-old woman was rescued in the province of Kahramanmaras, epicenter of the earthquakes, about 205 hours after being trapped by the collapse of her home.
Shortly before, two women aged 40 and 26 were also rescued in Hatay province after 203 and 201 hours trapped, respectively, at a time when hopes of continuing to find survivors of the earthquakes are diminishing.
Earlier in the day, two brothers, Muhammed and Abdulbaki Yeninar, had been found alive in the rubble of an eight-story building in Kahramanmaras. Muhammed was able to say he was «fine» while being evacuated in an ambulance.
Later, Abdulbaki said that both were able to feed on protein powder that his brother uses to supplement when he goes to the gym, while they were able to breathe through a hole in the concrete, as reported by the Turkish daily ‘Daily Sabah’.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed earlier Tuesday that more than 8,000 people have been rescued alive by emergency teams, before adding that «a significant percentage» of the more than 81,000 injured have been discharged, as reported by Anatolia.
The Turkish authorities have raised this Tuesday to about 32,000 the dead due to the earthquakes, balance to which must be added 1,414 dead in the areas controlled by the Syrian government and about 2,300 in areas in the hands of the rebels in the northwest of the country, according to data from the Syrian Civil Defense, known as ‘white helmets’.
