A protest calling for the release of the historic leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Abdullah Ocalan, forced the suspension of the plenary session and the evacuation of the hemicycle at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (France) on Wednesday.
The protesters broke into the plenary session shouting ‘Freedom for Ocalan’ and threw several papers from the rostrum of the hemicycle while the intervention of Mohammed Chahim MEP, from the European Socialists group, was taking place in the middle of the debate on the green industrial plan of the European Commission.
The interruption of the session began at 11:47 a.m. and lasted about 15 minutes until the vice-president of the Parliament, Pina Picierno, invited her colleagues to evacuate the room, where the European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Mairead McGuinness, was also present.
As confirmed by sources in the European Parliament to Europa Press, the security staff is making the appropriate inquiries so that the session can resume normally soon.
