
At least eight people have died, four of them minors, as a result of landslides following heavy rains in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, in the northern region of Brazil, on Sunday.
The landslides have affected a dozen houses in the neighborhood of Jorge Teixeira, in the eastern part of Manaus. Rescue teams are continuing their search efforts on Monday amid suspicions that more people may have been trapped under the mudslide.
The commander of the Amazonas Fire Department, Colonel Orleison Muniz, reported the arrival of Civil Defense rescue teams and stressed that they will remain »as long as necessary» until they find the last of the victims of »this tragic event», according to the news portal G1.
The Government of Manaus has activated the crisis committee after what happened on Sunday night. According to the authorities, the affected area is one of the 62 that exist in the capital of Amazonas catalogued as high risk.
The mayor of Manaus, David Almeida and the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, have traveled in the last hours to the affected areas to know first hand the rescue device that is being deployed.
