Europe – Tunisian coastguard rescues 11 migrants and recovers 29 bodies after shipwreck in Tunisia

The Tunisian Coast Guard has reported the rescue of eleven migrants and the recovery of 29 bodies following the sinking of a boat near Mahdia in Mediterranean waters.

The survivors are sub-Saharan migrants, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, Hossameldin el Gabali, said in an official statement, according to the Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM.

At first the survivors and up to eight bodies were rescued. Another 19 bodies were recovered by a fishing boat and two more were recovered by two other fishing boats near Sfax.

The boat reportedly departed from the town of Yebniana in the governorate of Sfax. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is already investigating the incident in coordination with Civil Protection and the hospitals that received the bodies.
