At least four people have died and 15 more have been injured following a shooting in the U.S. town of Dadeville, Alabama, during a 16th birthday party. Several of the wounded are in critical condition and six have already been released.
Tragically, three lives have been lost in this incident and there are a multitude of wounded,» said Police Sergeant Jeremy J. Burkett, according to CNN.
Among the deceased is an American soccer player, Philstavious Dowdell, brother of the girl who was celebrating the birthday, according to the chaplain of his team, Keenan Cooper, who was also the deejay of the party.
According to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), which was in charge of the investigation at the request of the city’s police headquarters, the incident took place at around 10:34 p.m. Saturday night at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio.
Another shooting has taken place this Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky, where two people have been killed by shots fired into a crowd. Four others are injured. The Louisville shooting is also the second shooting in less than a week. Last Monday an individual killed five people at a bank branch.
So far this year there have been 162 shootings with at least four victims, according to the Gun Violence Archive, or more than 1.5 shootings a day.
BIDEN CRITICISMS U.S. President Joe Biden has remembered the victims in Dadeville and Louisville. How has our country come to a time when children can’t go to a birthday party without fear, when parents worry when their children walk out the door to go to school or to the movies or to the park?» he asked.
Firearms are the leading cause of death of minors in the United States. The numbers are growing, not going down. It is outrageous, unacceptable,» he stressed.
Biden considers that Americans »agree and want» to legislate for greater security. Instead, last week Republican leaders joined the National Rifle Association in a bottomless race to dangerous laws that further erode safety. Our communities need and deserve better,»’ he has argued.
Former President Donald Trump was at a National Rifle Association event Friday where he pledged that he will be the »loyal and fearless champion» who will defend the Constitution’s Second Amendment, the one that enshrines gun ownership, if he wins the 2024 presidential election.
Biden has specifically advocated that Congress impose »without further delay» a law mandating the safe storage of firearms, requiring background checks for gun purchases, eliminating »manufacturer immunity» from liability claims, and banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
