Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said Sunday that his country is ready to normalize relations with the US as long as Washington puts an end to a «senseless policy» against Caracas promoted by former President Donald Trump.

In an interview with journalist Ignacio Ramonet, Maduro regretted the support given at the time by Washington to opposition leader Juan Guaidó, head of a «Narnia assembly», in reference to the fantasy genre books.

«We are prepared for dialogues at the highest level, for relations of respect, and hopefully, hopefully, a halo of light would reach the United States of America, they would turn the page and leave that extremist policy aside,» the president said.

In the economic sphere, Maduro has acknowledged the hard blows that Venezuela has suffered during the last months, to the point that the President even announced last month a series of economic measures to protect the official dollar rate, applied in foreign exchange operations, in the face of the collapse of the bolivar, which lost a fifth of its value with respect to the US currency.

«There has been a war against the currency and there have been various instruments at its stage. We have been able to calm down a good part of that disturbance, but in the last three months it had a great impact on the new exchange system in the country, which is fundamentally a market exchange system», he pointed out.

IMPROVEMENT IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Maduro highlighted an improvement in the relations between his country and the European Union, thanks in part to the holding of a round of dialogues with the opposition in Mexico.

«With the European Union I would say that things are progressing well, (there is) a permanent dialogue with Mr. Josep Borrell (High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) and a dialogue with the Ambassador of the European Union in Venezuela», explained Maduro.

The President also included in this progress the recent appointment of Ramón Santos Martínez as ambassador to the Latin American country, responded with the appointment of the diplomat Coromoto Godoy as new ambassador in Madrid.

«I believe that, in general, step by step, with strategic patience, with diplomacy, with respect, we can move forward with the European Union,» Maduro has asserted.
