The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) in Nador has reported that during the New Year’s Eve there has been an attempt to jump the fence of Melilla by dozens of young Moroccans while the Government Delegation in Melilla has asserted that there has been no approach or entry.

The Moroccan non-governmental organization, which became known after publishing the videos and images of the tragedy that occurred on June 24 at the fence that separates Melilla from Morocco, where there were 23 deaths according to Morocco and more than fifty according to NGOs, has indicated in its social networking profiles that the attempt has occurred in the early morning between December 31, 2022 and January 1, 2023.

The AMDH has detailed that there has been a «new attempt on New Year’s Eve at the Melilla barrier» when «dozens of young Moroccans tried to cross». The association has highlighted that «despite the police device put in place, some managed to cross».

However, from the Government Delegation in Melilla have denied these extremes by pointing out that «last night there was no approach to the perimeter of Melilla nor was there any jump», as stated to Europa Press by a spokesman.

The Spanish city in North Africa has experienced a 2022 of strong migratory pressure, especially in its first half, with a key day for its tragedy: June 24, 2022. On that day some 2,000 sub-Saharan migrants tried to cross from the Maghreb kingdom to the autonomous city, through the area of Barrio Chino, and dozens of them died on the Moroccan side.

Attempts to enter Melilla on New Year’s Eve have been repeated on several occasions over the last three decades, in an attempt by migrants to surprise the police forces, in the belief of a possible reduced police presence, both on the Moroccan and Spanish side, as it is a more festive day of the year. However, precisely because of this history, the Civil Guard remains on alert to deal with any incident at the Melilla fence.
