Former Congolese presidential advisor Fortunat Biselele has spent his first night in prison, a week after his arrest on charges of alleged espionage in the service of the Rwandan government at the height of diplomatic tension between the two countries.
Biselele is suspected of having provided confidential information to the Rwandan government, accused by the DRC of aiding the March 23 Movement rebels in their offensive in northeastern Congo. Rwanda absolutely denies any responsibility.
Tshisekedi’s influential private advisor was present at all the peace negotiations in eastern DRC and was also the main transmission belt between Kinshasa and Kigali.
It should be recalled that the Congolese Lieutenant General Philémon Yav has also been under arrest since last September for this reason.
The president of the DRC, Felix Tshisekedi, indicated at the time that the general was accused «by his colleagues of wanting the M23 rebels to take control of the city of Goma on behalf of Rwanda», explains the Actualité portal.
