South Korea’s Defense Ministry on Friday reiterated its commitment not to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine, clarifying rumors of a «confidential» agreement between Seoul and Washington on artillery exports bound for Kiev.

The ‘Wall Street Journal’ newspaper published hours earlier that the United States was planning to buy 100,000 artillery shells from South Korea with the aim of sending them to Ukraine.

In this regard, South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup has clarified that the «close consultations» with the Biden Administration are being held to «make up for the shortage of ammunition» in the US stockpile «under the premise» that the materials «will be used by the US».

«There is no change in the South Korean government’s commitment not to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine,» the ministerial portfolio has added, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
