At least four people have been killed and more than 15 injured by an earthquake measuring 7 on the open Richter scale in Papua New Guinea on Monday, authorities confirmed Tuesday, adding that more than 300 homes were destroyed by the quake.
The commander of the Police in the province of East Sepik, Christopher Tamari, has stressed that the balance is provisional, since the authorities are still working to collect information on victims and the extent of material damage, according to the Papuan newspaper ‘The National’.
The earthquake had its epicenter about 100 kilometers from the town of Wewak, while the hypocenter was about 80 kilometers deep. The authorities have pointed out that so far five aftershocks have been registered, although they have ruled out the risk of tsunami or volcanic eruption due to the earthquake.
