Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has been reelected for a second term in office in a vote before the new National Assembly of People’s Power, which was inaugurated on Wednesday following the results of the March 27 elections, in which the ruling party won absolute control of the main legislative body.
As reported by the president of the National Electoral Council (CEN), Alina Balseiro, a total of 459 members of the Assembly have decided to approve the president, 97.66 percent, while 439 votes have validated the vice president, Salvador Valdés Mesa, with 93.4 percent of the total, Cubadebate reported.
Although there were no annulled ballots, two blank votes were counted. The dissidence, which does not recognize the legitimacy of these processes, since the opposition has no representation in the Assembly, has tried in the last elections to encourage abstention.
Cuba defends the single party because it is at the root of our history», said Díaz-Canel after being reelected, adding that now »it is time to overcome obstacles», in reference to the economic sanctions against the island.
