Taiwanese authorities warned Friday that two People’s Liberation Army reconnaissance drones have flown over the island »for the first time» shortly after alleging that nearly 20 Chinese aircraft have entered its airspace.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said that an attack and reconnaissance drone, capable of carrying heavy weapons, circled the island, while another unmanned aerial vehicle made only a half-turn, movements that had not occurred until now, reported ‘South China Morning Post’.
Earlier in the morning, Taiwanese authorities reported that almost twenty fighters had entered their airspace and also detected the presence of six ships in the vicinity of the island.
In addition, earlier in the day, the Chinese Armed Forces reported that they had detected a U.S. Air Force fighter over the Taiwan Strait and have begun tracking and monitoring the aircraft.
The escalation of tensions in the region began with the trip to the island of the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August last year, although they have rebounded after the meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen and Kevin McCarthy, the current Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
