
International leaders have begun to react to Sunday’s inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as Brazil’s 39th president, which they hailed as the beginning of a new stage in relations with the South American country.
«Order and progress: Brazil lives up to its motto,» French President Emmanuel Macron let it be known on his Twitter account. «Congratulations, dear president and dear friend on your inauguration. we are together!» he wrote on his account.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier hailed the swearing-in as an act that puts Brazil «back on the international stage.»
«We need Brazil. We need a Brazilian political leadership that plays a role not only in economic cooperation, but also in global climate protection,» he has made known in statements picked up by DPA.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also congratulated Lula at the beginning of his «historic» third term as head of Brazil. «On behalf of the UK, I would like to wish him every success in his leadership of Brazil, and express our desire to strengthen our economic and environmental relations,» he said, also on his Twitter account.
Also on the same social network, the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and the vice-president, Cristina Kirchner, have greeted the investiture. «A new day dawns in South America,» wrote the former president. «Strength Lula, strength Brazil,» she added.
On the Spanish side, the second vice-president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, present at the investiture ceremony in Brasilia, highlighted a «historic day for the Brazilian people in which hope is finally making its way», in a message accompanied by an image with former Uruguayan president José Mujica and the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
The latter has expressed his wish that Lula’s swearing-in will join «these political changes that provoke the irreversible path of South American integration», while the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has greeted «a day of so much hope for Brazil, Latin America and the world», in a message that he has finished off with a «firm embrace».
Among the pending reactions to the investiture are some as outstanding as those of the United States or the Venezuelan representation, finally headed by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, «to accompany the brotherly Brazilian people» in the inauguration, according to a message published as soon as he landed in Brazil.
