The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has shown his «concern for the recent events in Bolivia», where the opposition to the government of Luis Arce has called a strike and clashes have been reported after the arrest of the governor of the capital, Santa Cruz.
The Secretary General’s associate spokesperson Florencia Soto Niño-Martínez explained that Guterres has made a «call for calm» and has appealed «to all political and social actors to exercise maximum restraint».
«(Guterres) reiterates the importance of adhering to the rule of law and ensuring due process and transparency in judicial processes,» reads a statement posted on the UN website.
Bolivia’s opposition has called a 24-hour strike for this Friday as a way to demand the «immediate» release of the governor of the Bolivian capital, Luis Fernando Camacho, as they consider it to be a «violent kidnapping» and have urged the judiciary to «no longer lend itself to political manipulation».
Since his arrest, there have been protests in Santa Cruz, including road and airport blockades, as well as attacks on institutional buildings such as the Palace of Justice or the house of the Minister of Public Works, Edgar Montaño.
Camacho is the main leader of Santa Cruz, the richest region of Bolivia and historically opposed to the governments of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the census law of Luis Arce’s government.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that occurred after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections, whose results were also questioned by the Organization of American States (OAS).
