Taiwan’s Defense Ministry on Friday denounced the incursion of 14 new fighter jets and six ships of the Chinese Army that have approached its air and sea space, as they have been doing repeatedly during the last few weeks.
Specifically, five of the Chinese fighters would have entered the air defense identification zone southwest of Taiwan, as detailed by the ministry in a message on the social network Twitter.
In response, Taiwan has been monitoring the situation and has assigned Area Force aircraft, navy vessels and ground-based missile systems to respond to these activities.
The Chinese incursion comes just one day after as many as 17 fighter jets crossed Taiwan’s air identification boundary, an episode that has been a regular occurrence for months.
The escalation of tensions in the region began with the trip to the island by the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August last year.
Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty. The Chinese government’s fundamental policy towards Taiwan has so far been one of peaceful reunification under the «one country two systems» principle.
