At least 13 people have died in the U.S. state of Mississippi during the passage late Friday of a tornado that has left a trail of destruction along 160 kilometers.
The most affected county was Sharkey County, where at least seven people died, followed by Carroll County, with three deaths. Two people died in Monroe County and another one in Humphreys County, according to the respective forensic departments, according to ABC.
However, the death toll could rise given the magnitude of the search and rescue operations now underway in Sharkey and Humphreys counties, as explained by the state Emergency Management Agency.
In fact, the town of Rolling Fork, home to some 2,500 people «has been practically devastated», according to the president of the United Cajun Navy humanitarian organization, Todd Terrell, as well as Silver City, a town with some 340 inhabitants, which has been the scene of enormous damage, according to Highway Patrol officer Jose Watson.
»Right now I would say this reminds me of the Joplin tornado,» Terrell added, referring to the 2011 tornado that killed 161 people, »or worse.»
