U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi explained Sunday that her family, and in particular her grandchildren, are «devastated and traumatized» by Friday’s politically tinged attack in which her husband, Paul Pelosi, was assaulted with a hammer in his own home.
«Sadly, a violent man broke into our home yesterday morning (Friday), demanded to see me and brutally attacked my husband Paul,» Pelosi said in a statement carried by U.S. public radio station NPR.
«Our children, grandchildren and I are devastated and traumatized by this attack on our ‘Pop’s’ life. Thanks to the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving,» Pelosi added.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was assaulted in his own home with a hammer by an individual politically aligned with former President Doland Trump who wanted to see Nancy Pelosi, a regular target of the ire of the American far right.
Pelosi has undergone surgery for a fractured skull and injuries to her right arm and hands. The medical staff attending to him expects him to make a full recovery. Pelosi has asked for prayers for her husband and assured that he «continues to improve.»
The suspect has been identified as David DePape, 42, who is also hospitalized with minor injuries, but is expected to be charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, abuse of an elderly person, battery, assault and other crimes in a San Francisco court.
