The president of the Mexican National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova, has urged this Sunday the Congress of the Union to discuss a political-electoral reform with the maximum consensus in order to avoid the excessive dominance of a majority and the exclusion of some formations.

«The need to build any reform with a broad consensus that prevents majoritarianism and exclusions that, if they occur, will inevitably be the source of problems that today we have already overcome in electoral matters,» he said in his weekly message published on Twitter.

Córdova has pointed out that work has begun on the reform, which, if successful, will be the result of «broader and more inclusive» consensus, which he has pointed out as an indispensable condition for democracy. «Otherwise we would jeopardize a political construction of 30 years that today is a source of stability and public peace», he said.

In addition, he took advantage of his words to recall that the organization he presides has offered information, documentation and accumulated experience that can be useful for the debate and to achieve a system that does not form broad majorities and does not lead to exclusions.

In the last week, the opposition alliance Va por México, formed by the PAN, PRI and PRD, has agreed to negotiate the reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. However, representatives of the three parties indicated that negotiation at a working table would be necessary to include some of their demands, such as prohibiting legislative over-representation.

On the contrary, the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) abandoned the dialogue, remaining alone in its opposition to this reform.
