Former presidents of Peru have published messages condemning what they consider a «coup d’état» by President Pedro Castillo, who has been arrested after announcing the dissolution of Congress and decreeing an «emergency» government.

Ollanta Humala has expressed in social networks his «total rejection» to the maneuver. «The Armed Forces owe honor and loyalty to the homeland and not to a dictator,» he has declared.

In the same vein, Martin Vizcarra has «totally» rejected this «attack against democracy», while Francisco Sagasti, Castillo’s predecessor in office, has assured that the outgoing president has put himself «outside the law and the Constitution» to get rid of accusations and «hide his incompetence».

«This illegal act of the President of the Republic amply justifies his immediate dismissal for permanent moral incapacity», he said, before the Congress made Castillo’s dismissal official.

«As former President of the Republic, I call on all citizens and public, private and civil society institutions to remain calm and seek political solutions within the framework of the Constitution,» he urged.
