One policeman was killed and another injured Saturday in an attack in Bannu, in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest of the country.
The suspected militiamen threw a hand grenade at a police van, a police spokesman, Wayid Jan, told the newspaper ‘Dawn’.
The attack took place near the police station in Bannu, where officers were preparing an operation, details of which have not been released.
Police have sent reinforcements to the area and have launched an operation to try to «hunt down the attackers», who fled after the attack. The wounded policeman has been hospitalized.
Bannu has been the target of several attacks by the Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban. On December 8, a checkpoint was attacked and a policeman was killed. On December 18, militiamen held at a detention center in Bannu revolted and took control of the compound.
Just this Saturday authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab region reported the arrest of five suspected terrorists in 21 operations. Among them were TTP members.
