Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has denied responsibility for the assault on institutions in Brasilia by his supporters.
Bolsonaro, more than seven hours after the attack on public buildings, has assured that during his mandate he has «always» complied with the Constitution, «respecting and defending the laws, democracy, transparency and sacred freedom».
«Furthermore, I repudiate the accusations, without evidence, attributed to me by the current chief executive of Brazil (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva),» the former president wrote in a series of messages posted on his Twitter profile.
Bolsonaro also compared the events of Sunday, which he described as «depredations and invasions» with the «demonstrations called by the left», assuring that they «escape the rule», since «peaceful demonstrations, in the form of law, are part of democracy».
The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, has affirmed that Bolsonaro is politically responsible for the attacks on democratic institutions that have taken place this weekend after weeks of threats.
«Politically it is clear that, to the extent that there was a conflictive transition and that there was no recognition of the electoral result and, on the contrary, there was an instigation to believe in esotericism, exoticism, strange or aggressive theses, it is clear that the political responsibility is unequivocal», said Dino, as reported by O Globo channel.
«The legal responsibility, obviously, falls on the Judiciary, on the Public Prosecutor’s Office. I do not see, at this moment, any element of legal responsibility for the former president,» said the minister, who added that legal responsibility may «appear» but that now there is none.
Even so, he reiterated that there is political responsibility. «All those who want to polarize, instigate the practice of crimes or extremism are politically responsible, by action or omission», he reiterated.
