Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has denounced Monday that it has detected more than half a hundred fighter planes and four Chinese Army ships near the island, while at least 28 of them have reportedly entered the Taiwanese air defense identification zone.
Following these exercises, the first of this caliber recorded this year, the Taiwanese Army has dispatched aircraft, navy ships and land-based missile systems «to respond to these activities,» the ministry said.
These moves come after Chinese authorities denounced the arrival this Monday of a group of German politicians on the island, during which they will meet with President Tsai Ing Wen and other high-ranking government officials.
This is the first German delegation to visit Taiwan this year and the third from Berlin in the last three months, according to the island’s Foreign Ministry.
The escalation of tensions in the region came with the trip of the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August last year.
