Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Sunday and met with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, who said it was a privilege to be there and to show solidarity with the country.
Johnson was photographed in the town of Borodianka, in the Kiev region, where he traveled after being invited by Zelenski himself. He also visited Bucha, where Russian troops allegedly committed war crimes.
«It is a privilege to visit Ukraine at the invitation of President Zelenski. The suffering of the Ukrainian people has gone on too long,» he said.
«The only way to end this war is for Ukraine to win and to win as quickly as possible. It is time to double down and give Ukrainians the tools they need to finish the job,» he added. «The sooner Putin fails, the better for Ukraine and for the whole world,» he stressed, as reported by the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’.
A spokesman for Johnson added that he fully supports the British government in its policy towards Ukraine, including the recent decision to send Challenger 2 battle tanks, and this visit demonstrates solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The British Government has expressed its support for Johnson’s trip to Ukraine. «The UK stands with Ukraine and will continue to support them,» explained a spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
For his part, Zelenski has stressed the need for NATO to host Ukraine to protect itself from Russia. «It is the best guarantee of security» for Ukraine, the Ukrainian leader defended during his meeting with Johnson, according to presidential spokesman Andrii Yermak.
Zelenski and Johnson also discussed the possibility of a peace conference proposed by Ukraine, for which he put forward two conditions to be fulfilled by Russia: security guarantees and the withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory.
