German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron at a summit meeting in Paris on Sunday called for a high-speed rail link between Berlin and Paris to provide more environmentally friendly transport between the two capitals.
The two countries «support a high-speed rail line linking Paris and Berlin, as well as the night train link planned for 2024,» they stressed in the joint declaration published after the summit.
This project «illustrates our desire to advance the decarbonization of our economies and our societies, as well as our cross-border links.» «We also support the introduction of the first common binational ticket for young people, which is planned for the summer of 2023,» they said.
Currently, the train journey between Paris and Berlin takes at least eight hours, although Paris and Frankfurt already have a high-speed train connection.
WAR IN UKRAINE Scholz and Macron have reiterated their condemnation of Russia’s «war of aggression against Ukraine» and assured that they will continue to «unwaveringly» support Ukraine «in all possible fields, including political, military, economic, financial, humanitarian, social and cultural.» «We will continue to support Ukraine and will stand by its side for as long as necessary,» they have reiterated.
We welcome the recent developments in the Future Air Combat System (FAS) and reaffirm our desire to move forward in the same spirit with respect to the Main Ground Combat System (SCTP).
Also on defense, the two leaders reiterated their «full» commitment to the agreement signed between France, Germany and Spain on defense export controls, «a key element of our cooperation in the field of armaments».
They also highlighted the work on projects for the design and manufacture of a new model of combat aircraft and a new model of battle tank, the Future Combat Aircraft System (FCAS) and the European Main Battle Tank (MGCS).
