Former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev was released Tuesday after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of his release pending a retrial against him.
The decision was made following a petition filed by his legal team, which cited new evidence and a change of «circumstance», sources close to the case said.
In addition, all restrictions imposed against him have been lifted, according to the weekly Vecherniy Bishkek. However, the former president was sentenced in 2020 to eleven years and two months in prison, as well as to the withdrawal of part of his assets, for a corruption offense that occurred in 2013 in connection with the release from prison of mafia boss Aziz Batukaev.
Atambayev has repeatedly emerged victorious from various court proceedings. In June 2022, a Bishkek court exonerated him of corruption and abuse of power offenses in connection with irregularities in the construction of a school and the issuance of passports to Turkish citizens.
