White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stressed Thursday that the United States »had nothing to do» with Wednesday’s alleged drone strike on the Kremlin and rejected Russia’s accusations about Washington’s alleged role in what Moscow described as an assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

»I can guarantee that the United States was not involved. We had nothing to do with that,» Kirby said during an interview with U.S. television network MSNBC. He also stressed that the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, »is lying» when he says that Washington is behind the event.

Peskov earlier in the day called Ukraine’s statements disassociating itself from the attack »ridiculous», while pointing out that the order would have been given by the U.S. authorities. »These decisions, the definition of targets and means, everything is dictated to Kiev from Washington. We are well aware of that,» he said.

However, Kirby has stressed that the U.S. authorities »do not dictate (to Ukraine) the ways in which to defend itself or the operations it conducts.» »We have been clear, publicly and privately, that we do not encourage or facilitate them to strike outside Ukraine,» he noted, while stressing that Washington »still does not know what happened» in the incident in the Kremlin.
