
The Lebanese Army has announced the rescue of 232 migrants in danger of death after their overloaded boat began to sink off the coast of Selaata, although it has confirmed the death of two people drowned during the rescue operation.
«The Lebanese Naval Forces, in collaboration with the (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) UNIFIL, have completed the rescue of the 232 people who were on board the boat off the beach of Selaata, and are currently being transferred to the port of Tripoli,» the Army said in a statement carried by Lebanese broadcaster LBC.
«The bodies of two people who drowned during the rescue operation were also recovered,» the military also confirmed.
UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti also confirmed that an Indonesian and a Greek ship joined the rescue operation last Saturday to provide assistance.
