The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militias have announced the arrest in recent days of some 92 suspected members of the Islamic State jihadist organization during a major security operation in northern Syria.
The «Lightning» operation began last Tuesday in the towns of Al Hol and Tal Hamis, known scenes of operations of Islamic State cells, scattered after their territorial defeat in 2017.
The raids have resulted in 52 and 40 detainees according to the two balances published so far by SDF spokesman Farhad Shami on his Twitter account.
«Those arrested have confessed their involvement in terrorist acts» to «arming Islamic State cells» to «carry out terrorist acts during the New Year vacations.»
The operation has been given the green light following an increase in terrorist attacks in the region and in retaliation for the jihadist attack earlier in the week on the SDF in Raqqa, which resulted in the deaths of six fighters from the Kurdish force.
«The operation is still ongoing until Islamic State cells are uprooted from densely populated areas,» he explained. Among those arrested are «middlemen and suppliers» of terrorist material such as «weapons, ammunition, fake documents and unauthorized military uniforms.»
