The Minister of the Brazilian Secretariat of Social Communication, Paulo Pimenta, has denounced the theft of firearms from the room of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Planalto Palace during the assault carried out by followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
«Each one of those briefcases has weapons, lethal weapons and non-lethal weapons that have been taken,» Pimenta denounced in a video posted on his social networks in which those empty briefcases can be seen.
Pimenta has told that they tried to set fire to one of these rooms and has insisted on the robbery perpetrated by the «criminals» who broke into the headquarters of Brazil’s Executive Power. «One more crime committed by the enemies of democracy».
Next to him can be seen the head of the National Secretariat of the Consumer, an office under the Ministry of Justice, Wadih Damous, who warned that those responsible for the robbery «had information of what they had to take» from that room. «They took weapons, documents and ammunition,» he said.
In the assault on the Planalto Palace, Bolsonaro’s followers ransacked and destroyed the office of the first lady, Rosangela ‘Janja’ Silva, and of Minister Pimenta, but not Lula’s, which has additional security.
«President Lula’s room has thicker glass (…) it has barriers. It has been isolated, as if it were an aquarium. They have managed to destroy ‘Janja’s’ office,» said Minister Pimenta.
The trail of destruction left in its wake by Bolsonaro’s acolytes has included damage to important works of Brazilian historical heritage, such as works of art like the Mulatas mural by Di Cavalcanti, or Araguaia by artist Marianne Peretti.
«Works of art, sculptures, works torn, pierced, broken,» lamented Pimenta, who assured that the assailants have especially targeted the facilities of the secretariat he directs.
In the seat of the Superior Court, the damages have affected the one known as Sala dos Bustos, in which there are sculptures of important figures in the history of Brazil, as the responsible for the creation of this court, Rui Barbosa, the replica of the original edition of the Constitution has been stolen and a carpet that belonged to Princess Isabel, daughter of Pedro II, has been damaged.
The damage to the historical heritage is incalculable and irreparable, sources at the Supreme Court told the newspaper ‘O Globo’. The president of the Supreme Court, Judge Rosa Weber, has denounced that the installations have been «severely destroyed by criminals, vandals and anti-democrats».
